This four-panel promotional booklet highlighting Disneyland’s brand-new Summer 1959 offerings was created as a special insert for the 1958 version of the official park guidebook, Walt Disney’s Guide to Disneyland. The new and updated attractions would appear in the next iteration of the guidebook, but to drum up publicity for the much-anticipated expansion (and until the current stock of guidebooks had been depleted), the concept artwork and illustrations of the insert were paired with the ’58 guidebook well into 1959.
The massive construction project, which saw the addition of the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Submarine Voyage attractions, changes to the Motorboat Cruises, Skyway, and Autopia attractions, as well as the implementation of the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail transportation system, cost $6 million and marked the largest expansion to date in the park’s short history.
