This 1986 flyer promoting the Captain EO Blast-Off event marks the official opening of the famed Epcot Center attraction starring the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.

The 17-minute, 3-D sci-fi adventure, which stars Jackson, alongside Anjelica Huston, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive-produced by George Lucas. The plot centers on Jackson’s character helming a spaceship (and a misfit crew of aliens) that has been tasked with delivering a gift to “The Supreme Leader,” played by Huston. The captain and his crew encounter a hostile reception, but ultimately use the power of music to overcome the ruler’s henchmen and transform the once-evil Supreme Leader into a beautiful queen. The film features two original Jackson songs, “We Are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me.”

The Captain EO Blast-Off, held on Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, 1986, throughout Epcot Center’s operating hours of 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. featured live entertainment, appearances from several of the film’s characters, and even a special laser-light show. The film would run concurrently at Disneyland in California for the next decade, and during that time open at both Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland, as well. Following Jackson’s death, the attraction returned to all four locations beginning in 2010, remaining in Epcot the longest, until December 2015.
