This 1954 issue of Life magazine features a cover photograph of the making of Walt Disney Productions’ live-action feature film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as well as a photo essay on pages 111-117 documenting the unique process and techniques used to achieve the film’s many underwater sequences. The sequences were shot in various locations throughout the Bahamas and Jamaica, and the completed film would be released later that year (December 23, 1954) to both critical and popular acclaim. It earned two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects), and would go down in history as one of the studio’s most popular live-action feature films.
